The day went well and by mid afternoon I had the great coral head secreted nearby and began to think of how I might cut it to display what I expected to be it’s beautiful interior.

Patience is a virtue that sometimes eludes me, but it was necessary in regards to the fossil. Things came up and I had no time to return again that season.

The next summer I had charter work to do with the Bureau of Land Management in that same drainage. One of the BLM biologists needed to do a fish inventory on the stream that ran beside the crooked little brushy strip. I told him that I could land him there safely, but that we should keep our gear to a minimum as I had a stone that I needed to haul out. He agreed and was anxious to see the rock that had so captured my attention.

First we did the inventory, finding only some small sculpin of one to two inches in length and other smaller fish. After satisfying his survey, I took him to the coral head. He was impressed and asked if we might locate another, for him. After spending an hour looking in the stream bed, he decided that he would be too overloaded on his return home to carry such a rock, even if we found another one, which we did not do, so we gave up our discovery efforts. I carried my fossil the short distance to the strip, loaded it in the cub and departed. So, it took six years for me to get that one out.

In Kotzebue a friend with a large diamond saw cut the fossil in half and I was the proud owner of a matched set of unique coffee tables. Since then I have come across even larger fossil rocks, but that is the largest that I got all the way home.
